
Don McCoy is an American businessman who was the Park President of Six Flags Magic Mountain and Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Concord from 2020 until 2023. Previously, McCoy has held other various positions at other Six Flags parks, including Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, Six Flags Over Georgia, Six Flags White Water, and The Great Escape.[1]
Career
1983–?: Wet 'n Wild Orlando
Don McCoy grew up in Orlando, Florida, where he began his career in the theme park industry.[2]
In 1983, McCoy decided to get a job at the nearby Wet N' Wild Orlando water park in the winter, where he got a position in park services.[2]
At Wet N' Wild, Don met George Millay, the park's owner, who is most well known as the "Father of the Waterpark". The two grew close, and McCoy saw him as a mentor.[2]
Staying with the company and moving to Dallas, Texas, McCoy was offered the position of park manager for Fun Sphere, a new business venture built adjacent to Wet N' Wild in Arlington.[2]
In 1995, Wet N' Wild in Arlington was purchased by Six Flags, who turned it into Hurricane Harbor.[2]
In 1997, McCoy moved to San Antonio to work on Six Flags Fiesta Texas, which at the time was the newest of the parks.[2]
1998–2004: Six Flags Over Georgia
In 1998, McCoy became the director of operations at Six Flags Over Georgia.[1]
2004–2007: Six Flags White Water
In 2004, McCoy became the park director of Six Flags White Water.[1]
2007–2013: The Great Escape
In 2007, McCoy became the park president of Great Escape.[1]
2013–2020: Six Flags Discovery Kingdom & Hurricane Harbor Concord
In January 2013, McCoy became the park president of Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.[1] His first visit to the park before getting the position was during Holiday in the Park 2012.[2]
In 2017, Six Flags acquired Waterworld California, which has previously operated as Six Flags Waterworld from to 2004 until 2007. McCoy was given the position of park president while also remaining the park president of Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.
2020-2023: Six Flags Magic Mountain, Hurricane Harbor Los Angeles & Hurricane Harbor Phoenix
In August 2020, it was reported that Neal Thurman was stepping down from his role as Park President of Magic Mountain and Hurricane Harbor as it was also announced that he would become the new President of Busch Gardens Tampa in Florida. Five days after the initial announcement, McCoy was named the new Park President of Magic Mountain, Hurricane Harbor LA as well as Hurricane Harbor Phoenix, succeeding Thurman. On October 5th, 2023, it was reported by Screamscape that McCoy was one of two executives to leave Six Flags, the other being the Chief Legal Officer. According to McCoy’s LinkedIn, he departed the company sometime in August of 2023, ending his run at the park.
