Worlds of Fun , also known as Worlds of Fun/Oceans of Fun , is a theme park and entertainment complex located in Kansas City, Missouri . It opened on May 26 , 1973 and was originally founded by businessmen Lamar Hunt and Jack Steadman . Divided into eight different themed sections primarily based on various real-world cultures and nations, Worlds of Fun is based on the Jules Verne novel Around the World in Eighty Days Oceans of Fun water park, Since July 1 , 2024 , the park is owned and operated by Six Flags Entertainment Corporation . Originally, the park was owned by Lamar Hunt's company Mid-America Enterprises, and in 1995 it was sold to Cedar Fair .
