Carowinds is a Six Flags theme park located mostly in Charlotte, North Carolina with a portion in Fort Mill, South Carolina. The park opened on March 31, 1973 and in its early years was owned by Taft Broadcasting, who also owned Kings Island and Kings Dominion. In 1993, Carowinds was sold to Paramount Communications and renamed Paramount's Carowinds as part of the company's Paramount Parks divison. It was filled with Paramount IPs and kept this name and branding until 2006, when it was sold along with Kings Island, Kings Dominion, and Canada's Wonderland to Six Flags's main competitor, Cedar Fair. On November 2, 2023, Six Flags and Cedar Fair announced they would be merging, bringing all of Cedar Fair's 11 amusement parks and 4 waterparks, including Carowinds, into the Six Flags brand. This went into effect on July 1, 2024.
